If you go to Yahoo Geocities you will find out that you can no longer create a new account. Yahoo has announced that later this year it is shutting down Geocities, a now ancient free hosting platform. Nothing has happened to existing account yet though you have to get your data out of Geocities before it officially closes it virtual door. Yahoo says that more detail on retreiving your data this summer.
Yahoo will not be offering a new free web hosting service and is offering a discount for those that want to transfer their websites into their paid hosting accounts. I would imagine not too many people take Yahoo up on this offer since the whole point of Geocities is to have a free hosted website. Plus, as of right now Blogger.com, WordPress.com, Typepad.com, and more offer great features for their free hosting service. If you type free web hosting into Google you will find over 40 million hits.
Jimdo is one company hoping to gain Geocities users as they are offering a rescue mission for Geocities users to transfer their data to the Jimdo platform.
At one time Geocities was as innovative as any platform online. Though now other free hosting platforms and social sites have passed them by. What is important to learn about this is saving your data from your other platforms you may be using as you never know when their turn is up. No one thought 5 years ago that Geocities would be falling.
