Like all industries SEO and Internet marketing has its own set of terms and jargon that people use.  They main seem obvious to the web veteran, for the average business owner they are not so simple.  I get emails from “know it all” types stating that most of my posts are not written for the online experts.  So, if you are one of the so called online experts reading this post you can stop now, as this another post to support your business owner who wants to get his business online and start web marketing.

I hear Google crawls my site; what does that mean?

As you start to learn about search engine optimization one of the first terms you hear is Crawling.  Google crawling your website means that a computer program called a bot and for Google a Googlebot scans your website for information.  People call these bots or computer programs spiders hence using the term crawling when they scan your website.  The bots are what gathers the information Google will use for its search results.

Google in their webmaster tools with you can sign up for free will give you stats on your crawls.  Google will show you issues with pages like pages that won’t load or generate errors.

Indexing the compilation of all the data Googlebots collect on websites.  Google organizes the information including titles, content, meta tags, and more to determine what information is important on your website and what your website offers.  Google states that their spiders have trouble with certain rich media files and dynamic pages which should be avoided when creating your website to make sure all of your information is indexed by Google.

Relevancy is the key term Google uses to determine which websites and pages will show up in Google search results when a web users types in a certain keyword phrase.  Google claims to use of 200 factors to determine what is the best web page that will deliver the searchers the results they are looking for.  One key determination is links pointing at a web page or domain.  Google tracks one way links to support what websites are more important.  Google does not give the same value to all links to prevent people cheating their system with worthless links in an attempt to rank higher.

All For Good

All For Good

Google has just launched a new search engine to support charitable organizations.  The new search engine is at allforgood.org where just like normal Google search you place the keyword of the type of charity you are looking for and the results give you opportunities in your area.  The goal of this project is to make finding and supporting charitable organizations easier for the average person.

The new community search engine also indexes serve.gov which is a project of Obama to further encourage participation in people’s communities.

An added feature to further narrow down your search is that you can search based on today, this weekend, this week, and this month.  If you wanted to get involved in your community this week you will be able to do so.

All For Good also uses the popular Google Maps feature to make it easy to find your place to get involved.

For every website, the goal is to rank in the top of Google search results for the keywords that are important to their business.  As businesses develop strategies for increasing their rankings and overall traffic there can be factors that affect their Google search results that they don’t even think about.  These more obscure factors become more important the more competitive the terms you want to rank for are.

5 Factors You May Not Now that Affect Your Google Rankings

  1. Poor links: you may have heard that links for poor sites don’t have the importance that high quality links do though did you know that if you are sending links to poor sites that Google can perceive your site to be part of thier ilk.
  2. Hosting issues: websites on not very stable hosting accounts can go down from time to time which means Google can’t spider your website.  If this is a common problem Google determines your site to be unstable and can drop it in the rankings.
  3. Duplicate titles: a good website will always have unique titles for every page on their website.  Having duplicate titles even on low ranking pages shows lack of quality for a website.
  4. Same anchor text: We know that effective anchor text can support your keyword rankings.  If you only get links with the same anchor text then Google sees that you are attempting to manipulate search results and can punish you.  It is important to change up some of your anchor text links.
  5. Spamming your page: You need your keyword on the page to rank for it.  Spamming your page with a high percentage of the same keyword over and over will drop your rankings instead of improve them.

Google has just released Google Friend Connect, which is a service that allows websites to easily add social media apps directly into their sites with no IT experience.  Just cut and paste the social application code you want and drop it into your website.

Directly Google Friend Connect won’t drive more traffic to your website.  The goal would be to enhance the social aspects of your site which can allow visitors to interact more.  You would need a fair amount of traffic already to have these features work so people have other people to interact with.

Google in the future which is only a guess on my part could find a way to involve the data from Google Friend Connect into the search algorithm.  Through this service Google would know if your articles are being rated favorably or not, plus would know how many friends and users are interacting.  They could use this information possibly in the future as a way of ranking different sites.

For right now go to Google Friend Connect which you can find by typing it into Google’s search bar and see if any of the social apps apply to your site.

Kumo

Kumo

Microsoft is in the works to launch Kumo, a new search engine to rival Google.  Microsoft’s goal with Kumo is offer a fresher look that focuses on organic results and better layout for advertisers.

If Kumo can live up to the hype it will be the best search engine experience that Microsoft has ever offered to the public.

The new search results of Kumo will place more importance on images and videos, and for have a stronger ecommerce presence.  The ecommerce features will give searchers more detailed information about the products, if they are in stock or not, and the different prices of online stores.

For example if you search for the term “iphone” you will have multiple filters to download apps, see related searches, search history, and more.

The new layout would allow for advertisers to blend more with the content and the goal would be make them more clickable.

The Kumo layout consists of three columns including a middle column for search content, advertisement on the right nav, and a new related searches and search categories on the left hand navigation.  The new left nav should make it easier for people to get back to recent searches and search categories which are based on successful search results.

There is no launch date yet for Kumo and we will keep you informed once it launches.

Google Page Rank has changed which has affected not everyone, though enough people were affected to make a significant difference. To better look at how PageRank has affected websites rankings in Google search engine, we first better have to look at what is Google PageRank.

Google Page Rank updates every 3 months or so which typically doesn’t mean much to most websites. Google is always updating page-ranks of web pages and every three months you see an update to the numerical value.

What is Google PageRank?

Page Rank is the algorithm created by Larry Page the founder of Google that associates a value to every web page to demonstrate a level of importance. Google themselves states that Page-Rank is an indicator of a page’s value based on a web pages link structure. PageRank is more than just a total amount of links going from one website to another; it also looks at how important are the websites sending the links.

Can My Google Pagerank be Hurt

posted by Authority SEO
Thursday, May 28, 2009

So can Google PageRank hurt you? This question is really answered by how you are using your website to create revenue or increase brand awareness.

As one way linking building has become important to Google for search results and PageRank, pay per post websites have sprung up to fill a demand for people looking for links. If you start to sell links from your site based on your Page Rank, the new links you are now sending out of your website will lower your Page Rank.

Google has taken on a fight to also go after blog link farms. A blog link farm would be a blog set up that sends lots of links out from the blog to certain websites. Blogs can be created fast and for free which makes them perfect for fast websites to get one way links. Google recognizes this and doesn’t give many blogs a favorable PageRank ranking. You many notice that many blogs have a page-rank of zero.

If you thought searching online was only for national or worldwide information, not any more.  Google has finished its worldwide rollout of local search in its search engine.  Every time your search now Google will guess to your location to give your more geo centric results.

How does Google know your location?  Google uses your IP address to get a general sense of your geographical area.  If you need to change your location you can click the “change location” link at the upper right hand corner of your page.

Searching online is now more and more important for local businesses to create an effective web presence.

On pay per click advertising 17.1% of all clickthroughs are click fraud according to Click Forensics, which has been monitoring click fraud since 2006.  Click fraud on Google Adsense and Yahoo Publisher is 28.2% of all clicks.  Majoring of the click fraud is achieved using automated bots and looks to be on the rise even more with the struggling economy.

Click fraud is the #1 reason why organic search engine marketing is the #1 way to market your website online.
