Spam in Twitter Trending Topics

On the right hand navigation of your Twitter profile is trending topics. A nice snapshot of the most tweeted topics on Twitter for the day. The idea is sound as I like to see what people are saying about current news and events though now I stay away because the trending topics is full of spam.
I believe spam is the #1 threat to Twitter. Twitter needs to get a handle on the automatic spam that is every where in Twitter. You now have to very careful when clicking on a link in trending topics as it could send you to a site ready to dump spyware and viruses onto your computer. I personally use Trend Micro for security which prevents me from opening dangerous web pages. I like reading information on Twitter and don’t really want to have to rely on Trend Micro to keep me out of harms way. As of right now I don’t even click into ‘trending topics’ in Twitter anymore.
I hope Twitter gets a handle on the spam running wild through their service so we can enjoy the many uses of Twitter.

The one key observation through all the Twitter research I have read is it seems there are more empty tweets to followers who never see them. Twitter has in some cases become empty self promotion.

Companies are becoming more clever on creating publicity using Twitter. It started with SquareSpace a blogging software company offered one free iPhone a day for 30 days for people to retweet them and has been taken to a new level by Moonfruit. Moonfruit is giving away 10 Macbook Pro’s over the next 10 days. They state they will deliver them to your doorstep as SquareSpace send gift cards instead of real iPhones.

By now I know you have heard of Twitter. Twitter has become all the rage, though you start your account and now it is how do I get followers. There is two ideas around followers before we get to how to get them. You have to decide what type of followers you want.
You may think that having thousands of followers is great. It could be. What would thousands of followers mean to your company if they were empty followers. What do I mean empty followers? You can easily tell the difference between a follower who is interested in your posts and a spammer or even just someone hoping to increase their own Twitter account who cares nothing about what you are talking about.
The reason I bring up this disction is that many people are attempting to get thousands of followers with little regard to the quality. This can be a good approach as it will in esence increase your online visibility and give you a better chance of finding people who are interested in your tweets.
The other option is using slower processes of building your Twitter followers though each follower is higher quality and are more ap to take action on information you provide. I will comment next to each of the steps as to what group of attending followers it belongs to.

- Twitter Trains: Twitter Trains are websites that you basically become followers of other people looking to create followers and then people join you. It is all about “all aboard.” These followers are of low value as your followers only did this so they can get followers just like you did. It can work well as you can lots of followers quickly where some could want to follow you for real. The one thing a lot of followers does is it looks good to potential new followers checking out your account.
- Follow others: You can use the search feature in Twitter or join the Twitter accounts from websites that you enjoy their information. The goal is that they will then follow you back. If they chose to follow you back they are much higher quality then Twitter Trains as they made a choice to follow you because they wanted to. You also will be on their follower list that others can see.
- Follow me on your site: You can put a link back to your Twitter account on your blog, website, and online commenting profile(Authority SEO uses DISQUS). Twitter is all the rage. Everyone is tweeting now on who knows what from celebrities to serious news anchors. Do you remember when MySpace was the biggest thing around? The problem with social networks is they come and go so you have to keep up with what is the current one that is generating traffic.
Myspace is now laying off jobs as they are over saturated with employees expecting their rocket growth to continue.
I am not saying not to have a presence on the social networks far from it. What I am saying what will not come and go is a consistent approach to building your own successful website. If you spend too much of your resources on social media and that site goes under all that work will be lost. Even if someone some day over takes Google they still will still need to deliver to people effective websites that deliver the information people are looking for.
